Brass – Fact File by Olly & Andy

Want to learn more about the brass section in the orchestra?

Explore our information, diagrams and sounds to find out!

What instruments belong to the brass in the orchestra and why are they part of this group?

Trumpet, french horn, trumbone, flugel horn and tuba belong to the brass. You blow through them with your lips. They are part of this group because they are made of brass (a special type of gold coloured metal). This gives these instruments their distinct sounds.

What special jobs or parts of the music do the brass play?

In the orchestra, the trumpets and horns sometimes play the tune and most of the brass section play the main notes because they are loud.

Describe the sound or style of music the brass play:

The family of instruments can play the loud and important parts of songs- they are often the instruments in marching bands and parades. They can be heard from far away. That’s why they are the second section from the back of the orchestra.
